Lega rally against the mosque on the former Nebiolo site
Date of the event:

On 31 October 2026, from 11am, the Lega party held a rally with a petition signature drive at the corner of corso Novara and via Bologna, in Turin, close to the site of the former Nebiolo foundries (Fonderie Nebiolo) where a mosque is planned to be built. The initiative aimed to gather signatures for a petition addressed to the city administration asking it to stop the project [1].
The rally
The rally was attended by numerous Lega figures at various institutional levels: members of parliament, regional councillors, and city and district councillors. Among those present were Riccardo Molinari, the Lega's regional secretary in Piedmont; Silvia Sardone, a Lega member of the European Parliament; Elena Maccanti, a Turin member of parliament and city councillor; and Enrico Bussalino, the regional councillor for security [1][2].
The reasons given
In a joint statement, Fabrizio Ricca and Elena Maccanti said the rally was meant to «give a voice to the residents of Aurora and Barriera di Milano, who have never really been listened to on a project of this scale». According to the two Lega figures, mayor Stefano Lo Russo had pushed the project forward «without any real dialogue with the neighbourhood», arguing that the area has other priorities, «starting with safety, decent conditions and services for the people who live there every day» [1][2].
The disputed project
The project concerns the construction of an Islamic place of worship on the site of the former Nebiolo foundries, described by the Lega as one of the largest mosques in Europe. It is a project worth around €17 million, of which €8 million has been pledged by the Kingdom of Morocco; according to reports, there is still no clarity on the rest of the funding [1][2]. During the morning of the rally, residents were able to sign the petition addressed to the city administration asking it to stop the project [1].
