Immunisation campaign against respiratory syncytial virus in Piedmont (October 2026)

From 1 October 2026, Piedmont resumes its free immunisation campaign against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) for newborns.[1] RSV can cause severe illness and, in extreme cases, death in infants under six months of age, in people over 65, and in those with a compromised immune system. [4] The campaign has run every year since 2024, when it first began on 1 November with the monoclonal antibody Nirsevimab. [3] The monoclonal antibody is administered by paediatricians, directly at birth centres for babies born in the autumn and winter months, while for babies born in earlier months it is administered through the family paediatrician taking part in the initiative or through the relevant local health authority (ASL). [4] The campaign, which is free and voluntary, uses monoclonal antibodies — a form of passive immunisation that supplies ready-made antibodies — offering protection for at least five months and reducing RSV infections requiring hospitalisation by 80%; for the 2026–2027 season the Piedmont Region has budgeted a maximum spend of 7.59 million euros and 25,000 available doses.
