Frejus pass
The Frejus pass is located in the upper Susa Valley, in the municipality of Bardonecchia, and is one of the main links between Italy and France. It is used daily by motorists, cross-border commuters and commercial vehicles heading abroad, making it one of the strategic points for international traffic in western Piedmont [2].
Border police checks
The pass is overseen by the Bardonecchia border police sector, which carries out crime prevention and law enforcement there, with particular attention to combating cross-border illegality [1].
The 2026 special operation
Between 28 September and 18 October 2026, the state police carried out a special surveillance and control operation at the pass, during which 3,450 people were identified and 830 vehicles checked [1][2].
The operation ended with ten arrests and five reports with the suspects left at liberty. The offences involved included possession of forged documents and breaches of immigration law, as well as the enforcement of restrictive measures ordered by the judicial authorities [1][2].
Among the episodes of the operation, officers from the Bardonecchia police station arrested a man subject to an imprisonment order, who still had to serve a remaining sentence of 11 months and 26 days [1][2].
