Extraordinary checks at the Frejus (September-October 2026)
Date of the event:
Between 28 September and 18 October 2026 the State Police (Polizia di Stato) carried out an extraordinary surveillance and checkpoint operation at the Frejus crossing, in the upper Susa Valley, one of the main links between Piedmont and France. The activity was coordinated by officers of the Bardonecchia border police sector, as part of services aimed at preventing and countering crime, with particular attention to cross-border illegality [1][2].
The numbers
Over the three weeks of checks along the border, 3,450 people were identified and 830 vehicles were checked [1][2]. The record of the judicial-police activity shows ten people arrested and five reported while remaining at liberty [1][2]. The offences involved included possession of forged documents and breaches of immigration law, as well as the enforcement of restrictive measures ordered by the judicial authority [1][2].
The notable arrest
Among the measures carried out in the period, officers of the Bardonecchia public security police station arrested a man who was the subject of a committal order issued by the judicial authority. He has 11 months and 26 days of a prison sentence left to serve [1][2].
The Frejus crossing
The Frejus crossing is a major link between Italy and France, used daily by motorists, commuters and commercial vehicles heading across the border. Its position makes the border police's surveillance activity part of the services aimed at preventing crime and countering illegal activity that can affect international links [2].
