European Caregiver Day 2026 in Turin
European Caregiver Day 2026, marked on Tuesday 6 October, was the occasion for a week of initiatives promoted in Piedmont and Aosta Valley by the Piedmont and Aosta Valley Oncology Network, in collaboration with the Regional Health Authorities, iNOC, Humanitas and Cottolengo. The event involved 23 hospitals and healthcare organizations across the region, with activities open to the public such as open days, round tables and information points dedicated to oncology caregivers, the people who look after family members or friends with cancer.[1][2]
Initiatives in Turin
At the Molinette hospital in Turin, at the Coes, an information point for patients and families was held on 6 October, open from 10 am to 3 pm. From 12 to 1 pm a musical event titled "Where words cannot reach... Music speaks" was held, featuring Daniela Camoletto on violin, Patrizia Granero on piano and Maurizio Palermo as sound technician. Throughout the day, informational brochures on the daily life of those caring for a non-self-sufficient person were distributed.[1][2]
The role of the oncology caregiver
The oncology caregiver accompanies the patient during visits, tests and treatments, manages home therapy, supports adherence to care, handles administrative matters and offers emotional support during the most critical moments of the illness. For many families, the caregiver becomes the main coordinator of the care pathway, a kind of informal "case manager" linking hospital, community services and home.[1]
Caregiving data in Italy
According to ISTAT data for 2024, caregivers, defined as people who provide care to cohabiting and non-cohabiting individuals, represent 24.9% of the Italian adult population, corresponding to over 12 million people, the majority of them women. Of these, about 4.4 million are family caregivers living with the person they care for, engaged in daily and continuous assistance.[1][2]
The Piedmont Region recognizes the social and economic role of family caregivers and allocates resources to support programmes: in 2025 the Region was allocated 2.373 million euros from the National Fund for the recognition of the caregiving role of family caregivers.[2]
