Collapse of the crane on via Genova
Date of the event:

The collapse of the crane on via Genova is the accident that took place on 18 December 2021 at a building site on via Genova, in Turin, in which three workers died. The episode gave rise to a criminal trial before the Turin Court, still under way in the autumn of 2026.
The accident and the victims
Filippo Falotico, originally from Coazze, Roberto Peretto and Marco Pozzetti lost their lives in the collapse [1][2].
The trial
Roberta Iandolino, Stefano Sprocatti, Enrico Calabrese, Mirzad Svraka and Federico Fiammengo are charged, on various counts, with manslaughter and complicity in a negligent disaster [1][2]. The trial is being held before judge Claudio Canavero, in courtroom "maxi aula 3" of the Turin Court [2].
In his closing statement on 7 September 2026, public prosecutor Giorgio Nicola requested three years' imprisonment for Roberta Iandolino, Stefano Sprocatti and Enrico Calabrese, two years and six months for Mirzad Svraka and two years for Federico Fiammengo [1]. In the hearings of 20 and 30 October 2026 the defence's closing arguments were made: the lawyers for the five defendants disputed the possibility of establishing the causes of the collapse with certainty, a position at odds with that held by the prosecution and the civil parties [1][2]. According to lawyer Saverio Rodi, defending Enrico Calabrese, the expert report ordered by the judge did not make it possible to clarify the causes, but provided only one of the possible hypotheses [2]. Lawyer Carlo Cavallo, representing Mirzad Svraka, argued that the crane operator, although experienced, bore no supervisory responsibility for decisions made before his involvement regarding the organisation of the site, nor had he the authority to decide where the mobile crane should be positioned [2].
Massimiliano Quirico, director of the association Sicurezza e Lavoro (Safety and Labour), which joined the trial as a civil party, stated that the expert report and the arguments put forward by the public prosecutor and the civil party's lawyer point to specific responsibilities for each of the five defendants [1][2].
The trial schedule provides for further hearings, dedicated to rebuttals and counter-rebuttals, on 3 and 4 December 2026; the first-instance verdict is expected at their conclusion [1][2].
