Clashes of 31 January 2026 in Turin over the eviction of Askatasuna

The clashes of 31 January 2026 are the disorders that took place in Turin in corso Regina Margherita during a national march called against the eviction of the Askatasuna social centre. The demonstration left more than 100 officers injured and caused 283,000 euros in damage. The investigation into the events led to the execution of 16 precautionary measures, including two arrests and seven placements under house arrest, against people under investigation for what happened during the march. [1]

The march and the clashes

The march, joined by groups from Turin's and the national antagonist movement, union delegates and members of the Islamic community, had been called with three assembly points (Porta Nuova, Porta Susa and Palazzo Nuovo) due to converge on an objective not announced in advance. During the demonstration, clashes took place that the Turin preliminary investigations judge Giulia Caveglia described as urban guerrilla warfare, with the indiscriminate use of fireworks, the throwing of blunt objects and the uprooting of road signs against officers. [1] One officer of the Reparto Mobile reported being trapped inside a vehicle for ten minutes during the clashes. [1]

Planning at the Campus Einaudi

According to the order issued by judge Caveglia, the march had been prepared two weeks earlier, on 17 January 2026, in two classrooms at the Campus Einaudi made available by the university at the request of student collectives. At the meeting, attended by around 750 people, the assembly points for the march were indicated, as well as their subsequent convergence on an unspecified objective. Among the recorded remarks was one by Sara Munari, a figure of the Askatasuna collectives, who had spoken of the need to "all unite together in defence of social spaces". [1]

The precautionary measures

The investigation, which culminated in the order issued by gip Giulia Caveglia, led to the execution of 16 precautionary measures: two people were arrested and placed in pre-trial detention, seven others were placed under house arrest. [1] Among those arrested, a 28-year-old activist, Davide Frigo, is under investigation for attempted murder in connection with the danger faced by the Reparto Mobile officer trapped in the vehicle; the other person arrested is a 35-year-old man, Mattia De Brasi. Sara Munari was placed under house arrest as part of the same proceedings. [1]
