Centenary of the Croce Verde Torino Mountain Rescue Team
The Mountain Rescue Team of Croce Verde Torino, affiliated with Anpas, reaches the milestone of one hundred years of mountain rescue work in Piedmont. The anniversary was celebrated on 3 October 2026 with a conference at the Auditorium of the Grattacielo Intesa Sanpaolo in Turin, where the regional councillor for Mountain Development and Promotion, Marco Gallo, presented a commemorative plaque to the president of Croce Verde Torino, Mario Paolo Moiso. [2]
The team was founded in 1926 by Gino Olivetti, already president of Croce Verde Torino from 1910 to 1938, as a hiking group that later evolved alongside the growth of skiing in Piedmont, active from the 1930s on the slopes of Sestriere and Sauze d'Oulx, and the creator in 1934 of the first toboggan models for transporting the injured. [2]
The mountain section today counts almost a hundred highly specialised volunteers, within a Croce Verde Torino that, ahead of its 120th anniversary in 2027, has around 1,400 volunteers, more than 80,000 operations a year and 60 ambulances. [2]
At the conference, an analysis of about 50,000 operations carried out over more than seventy years, presented by volunteer doctors Raimondo Piana and Erico Schiavone, found a decline in fractures of the tibia, fibula and ankle alongside an increase in head injuries and injuries to the femur, pelvis and shoulder, linked to changes in ski slopes and to modern equipment that allows higher speeds.
