Biennale Democrazia
Biennale Democrazia is an event of lectures, debates and meetings on democracy held in Turin every two years since 2009. It is promoted by the City of Turin and organized by the Fondazione per la Cultura Torino together with the Polo del '900, the University and the Politecnico; it was conceived by and is chaired by the jurist Gustavo Zagrebelsky.[1]
It is held under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic, and its archive preserves over a thousand hours of lectures and debates.[1] Its scientific curator is Massimo Cuono and its organizational director is Alessandro Isaia.[1]
Editions
The first edition was held in April 2009, in the presence of President Giorgio Napolitano.[2] The 2019 edition, from 27 to 31 March, was titled «Visibile Invisibile» and featured 133 events, opened by Fabrizio Gifuni with «I sommersi e i salvati» by Primo Levi.[5] The eighth edition, from 22 to 26 March 2023, was dedicated to the theme «Ai confini della libertà», announced by Zagrebelsky in June 2022.[6]
The ninth edition, from 26 to 30 March 2025, was titled «Guerre e paci», with Intesa Sanpaolo, Compagnia di San Paolo and Fondazione CRT as main partners.[3] The final count included over 45,000 attendees at more than 150 events in 46 locations across the city, with over 250 speakers, more than 2,000 students and 160 volunteers, including meetings held inside the Lorusso e Cutugno prison; among the sold-out events were Zagrebelsky's lecture and Alessandro Barbero's talk on how wars end.[7]
The tenth edition is scheduled from 7 to 11 April 2027.[4] In preparation for it, starting in September 2026 the event is offering the podcast «Meglio la democrazia», recorded at the Specola, a program involving over 180 school classes, and the project «La Prima Volta» for those who will vote for the first time in 2027.[8]
