Annual Aiscat–Traffic Police meeting 2026

The annual meeting between Aiscat (the Italian association of motorway and tunnel concessionaires) and the Traffic Police was held in Turin from 4 to 6 October 2026, with the participation of concessionaire companies, institutions, experts and the scientific community, to take stock of developments in mobility and accident-prevention strategies on the Italian motorway network.[1][2]

The data presented

Over the last twenty years the Italian motorway network has recorded a 59% reduction in fatalities, a 46% reduction in accidents and a 43% reduction in injuries, even as traffic volumes grew to exceed pre-pandemic levels.[1][2] The concessionaires belonging to Aiscat manage over 5,100 kilometres of motorways, more than 84% of Italy's toll network; in 2025 traffic volumes reached 78.5 billion vehicle-kilometres, with heavy vehicles accounting for about a quarter of the total. The sector directly employs over 10,000 people, in addition to related industries.[1]

Checks and regulations

According to the Interior Ministry's 2025 report, the Traffic Police carried out 423,328 patrols on roads and motorways, checked 2,014,439 people and issued 1,602,794 fines, including 11,126 for drink-driving and 1,469 for driving under the influence of drugs. On motorway stretches, the Tutor average-speed detection system recorded 362,792 violations.[1][2] Among the factors cited as decisive in reducing accidents are regulatory changes on mobile phone use while driving, drug-impaired driving, alcolocks and short-term licence suspension.[1]

Statements

Aiscat's president, Fabrizio Larini, attributed the results to cooperation with the Traffic Police and to concessionaires' investment in specialised staff for the early reporting of hazards, stressing the importance of checks, information for road users and educational action, particularly around roadworks.[1][2] The director of the Traffic Police Service, Santo Puccia, highlighted the decrease in fatalities recorded in 2025, hoping the figure would be consolidated in 2026 as well.[1] The State Police's central director of specialities, Renato Cortese, described cooperation between the Traffic Police and Aiscat as an important factor in raising safety levels, based on shared resources, training and technological innovation.[2]
