Alessio Carbone

Alessio Carbone is artistic director of the Balletto di Venezia and a former principal dancer of the Opéra national de Paris. Since 2024 he has been working with the organisation Still I Rise and with the Orsolina28 Art Foundation, based in Moncalvo, in the province of Asti, on choreographic training projects for young students of the Still I Rise International School in Nairobi, in the Mathare district [1].

Collaboration with Still I Rise

The collaboration between Carbone and Still I Rise began in 2024 with fundraising initiatives and introductory dance workshops for students of the Nairobi school, an institute that offers the International Baccalaureate programme free of charge to vulnerable children and teenagers and which was recognised as an Ib World School in 2024 [1]. In 2025, during a visit to Kenya, Carbone started a first choreographic project with a group of students, laying the groundwork for the project developed in 2026 at Orsolina28 [1].

The artistic residency at Orsolina28

From 1 to 8 November 2026, twelve students of the Still I Rise International School of Nairobi are guests of the Orsolina28 Art Foundation for a week of activities dedicated to contemporary dance, choreographic creation and intercultural exchange, led by Carbone [1]. Alongside him are Guillaume Diop, a dancer of the Paris Opera, Abou Rutayisire, of the Ballet de Barcelona, and Touve Ratovondrahety, a pianist and composer [1]. The programme also includes choreographic workshops, movement labs, hip hop and street dance classes led by Aurora Denaro and a musical theatre workshop led by Carlotta Bolognese [1]. The students from the Nairobi school shared some activities with the pupils of Scuola28, the Foundation's dance school [1].

The programme concluded on Saturday 7 November 2026 with the show «Still I Dance - Rising Together», staged at the The Eye theatre of Orsolina28, with free admission and the option of a voluntary contribution [1][2]. The experience was documented through an artistic and narrative video [1].
