Quincinetto

Quincinetto is a Piedmontese municipality, a destination for hiking and mountain walks. The village made the news in September 2026 for an episode involving a hike that ended with a viper bite to a tourist, who was later rescued by medical staff from the Rivoli hospital.

The September 2026 viper bite

On Sunday 20 September 2026, a man in his fifties was bitten on the neck during a hike in Quincinetto by a viper that had slipped unnoticed into his backpack [2]. Because of the bite’s location, close to the airway, the hiker developed severe respiratory symptoms [1][3]. He was airlifted in critical condition to the emergency room of the Rivoli hospital [2].

Hospitalisation and treatment

At the Rivoli emergency department, the patient was taken in by anaesthesiologist-resuscitators Cecilia Quaranta and Carola Girardi, who intubated him as an emergency measure and administered antivenom serum [1][3]. After a few hours in intensive care he was admitted to the hospital’s resuscitation unit, headed by Michele Grio, within the emergency department, for intensive clinical monitoring [2][3]. According to Grio, in the hours following intubation the clinical picture improved, with subsequent extubation and a return to normal autonomous breathing and intact neurological function [2]. The man was discharged on Friday 25 September 2026 in generally good condition [1][2][3].

The general director of the ASL To3 health authority, Giovanni La Valle, commented on the episode, stressing the speed and appropriateness of the rescue and describing the Rivoli hospital as one of the reference facilities for emergency management in the western area of Turin [1][2].
