Police raid in Verbania after the Fondotoce assault
The police raid in Verbania was a search operation carried out during the night between 9 and 10 September 2026 by the State Police and the Guardia di Finanza in the homes of eight people believed to be involved, to varying degrees, in a violent assault that took place on 5 August 2026 near a well-known venue in Fondotoce, a hamlet of the municipality of Verbania. The incident had left five people injured, with recovery times estimated between 5 and 30 days.[1]
The assault of 5 August
On the night of the incident, officers from the police patrol units had intervened, while the forensic police carried out initial inspections, identifying and seizing the weapons used during the violence. From that point on, investigations were carried out by the Mobile Squad, supported by the Economic and Financial Police Unit of the Guardia di Finanza, which reconstructed the sequence of events that evening and identified the people present through analysis of CCTV footage and witness statements.[1]
The people involved
Investigators identified eight individuals: seven young men aged between 25 and 30 and a 45-year-old man, all of whom, according to investigators, were already known to law enforcement for prior police records and criminal offenses.[1]
The searches and seizures
On the night of 10 September 2026, searches were carried out at the homes of the eight individuals, also involving police canine units and two Guardia di Finanza canine units from Domodossola and Verbania. During the operation, wooden daggers, baseball bats, throwing knives, folding and butterfly knives with blades of various lengths, knuckle dusters and swords were found, along with ammunition, mobile phones and more than 2,500 euros in cash. Drug-detection dogs also led to the discovery of more than 20 grams of hashish and marijuana combined. At the end of the operation, one person was reported for drug possession.[1]
Developments in the investigation
The investigation is still ongoing: investigators continue to reconstruct the relationships among the eight people identified and the background events that may have preceded the assault on 5 August, in order to clarify the roles, responsibilities and motives behind the incident.[1]
