Opening of the Wizz Air Base at Caselle Airport

On 14 September 2026 the low-cost airline Wizz Air officially opened a new operating base at Turin-Caselle Airport, bringing to the airport its first permanently based Airbus A321Neo. A second aircraft was scheduled to arrive on the following 25 October. With this opening, Turin became Wizz Air's seventh base in Italy, a country where the airline ranks second by market share [1].

The new routes

The investment allowed Wizz Air to expand its network to 23 routes to ten countries, with about 1.3 million seats put on sale in 2026. The ten newly announced destinations are Barcelona, Bilbao, Lamezia Terme, Madrid, Malaga, Naples, Rome Fiumicino, Sharm el Sheikh, Suceava and Valencia. From January 2027, Saturday winter routes to Wroclaw, Gdansk, Katowice and Prague were also added [1].

The link with Rome and Spain

Among the most significant developments is the strengthening of the connection with Rome, increased to eleven weekly flights. Torino Airport's CEO, Andrea Andorno, pointed out that the low-cost, point-to-point offer complements the long-standing link with the capital and may draw in some of the passengers who currently choose the train, increasing competition on fares. There was also strong investment in Spain, with eleven weekly flights to Barcelona, four to Madrid and Valencia, three to Malaga, while Bilbao is an entirely new destination. According to Andorno, Spain is one of the airport's main markets, balanced between Piedmontese travelers departing and Spanish travelers arriving, and has been growing steadily in recent years [1].

Employment and development plan

The route to Sharm el Sheikh also started on 27 October 2026. According to Wizz Air, the presence of the two aircraft based at Caselle generates 80 new direct jobs and about 700 indirect ones. Wizz Air Malta's managing director, Mauro Peneda, described the arrival of the first two aircraft as the start of a new phase of growth. The opening of the base is part of a new development cycle at Caselle Airport, for which Enac has approved an overall investment plan of 114 million euros [1].
