Fatal accident on corso Regina Margherita

On 22 September 2026, a seven-year-old child died in Turin, struck by a car while riding a bicycle along the service road of corso Regina Margherita on the way to school [2]. The episode sparked public mobilisation on the issue of road safety, involving city associations and the world of competitive cycling.

The mobilisation of competitive cycling

Following the episode, the Italian Cycling Federation asked the International Cycling Union (UCI) to authorise Italian national team athletes to race with black armbands at the Cycling World Championships in Montreal, scheduled for late September 2026 [1]. An initial request was turned down by the UCI, but the Italian federation submitted a new request limited to the elite races on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September, which was accepted [1]. In the statement released, the FCI explained that it had acted in response to "the feeling of the sporting community and its members" and requests received from several quarters, with the aim of remembering the child "and all cyclists, whether federation members or not, or simply bicycle users, who are victims of road accidents in Italy" [1].

The city vigil

The association Fiab Torino Bike Pride organised a vigil for 29 September 2026, at 7pm, outside Turin’s City Hall, held at the same time as a similar initiative in Milan, where other fatal road accidents had occurred in the preceding days [2]. The organisers asked the authorities to recognise the collective nature of the road safety problem, to act on the design of urban streets and to turn service roads, including that of corso Regina Margherita, into spaces with pedestrian and cycling priority, with dedicated signage, speed-calming measures and parking restrictions [2]. The request also included an increase in checks and penalties against dangerous driving and illegal parking, according to the principle of the hierarchy of responsibility among road users [2].
