Enrico Fermi Nuclear Power Plant in Trino

The Enrico Fermi Nuclear Power Plant is located in Trino, in the Province of Vercelli, in Piedmont. The plant is currently undergoing decommissioning, managed by the company Sogin. The site includes a conventional area, which contains the office building, and a controlled area, where the structures subject to radiological safety restrictions are located.

Decommissioning activities

The dismantling of the plant continues under the responsibility of Sogin, the state-owned company in charge of decommissioning Italy's nuclear facilities. Sogin maintains contact with the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) and the National Inspectorate for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ISIN) for the management of the site [1][2].

Fire of 7 November 2026

On Saturday, 7 November 2026, a fire broke out in the office building, in the conventional area of the plant. The event did not involve the plant's controlled area and, according to Sogin, did not pose any radiological risk [1][2].

At the time of the fire the offices were closed and no staff were present in the affected rooms; no injuries or people involved were reported. The fire brigade intervened to extinguish the fire and secure the area, and the fire was contained and put out thanks to the emergency procedures in place for the site [1][2].

Sogin informed the relevant authorities and began working with them to establish the causes of the fire, which were still being verified at the time the news was released. According to Sogin, the event had no consequences for the population, the surrounding environment, or the site's nuclear and radiological safety. Decommissioning activities continued as normal, temporarily using other areas of the site while the damaged rooms are restored [1][2].
