Attempted car theft with a child on board in Asti
News of
The attempted theft took place in the car park of a supermarket in Asti, where a drunk man got into the driver's side of a car intending to steal it. He had not noticed that the back seat held the son of the couple who owned the car, left unattended for a moment while the parents were loading their shopping into the boot [1][2].
How it happened
Taking advantage of the family's distraction, the man, already known to police, began searching the dashboard for keys or valuables. The father, noticing the stranger's presence, intervened, restraining him and getting his family to safety, before stepping away and calling the single emergency number 112 [1][2].
The police response
The description provided by residents allowed the operations room of the Asti police headquarters (Questura) to quickly alert patrols in the area. The suspect was traced within a few minutes, inside a shop not far from the scene [1][2].
Charges and measures
When officers arrived, the man was aggressive, and remained so at the Questura during the subsequent checks. At the end of the formalities, he was reported, without arrest, for aggravated attempted theft, resisting a public official and making threats against a public official; he was also fined for public drunkenness and served with an order barring him from the town centre (urban Daspo) [1][2].
