Arson wildfires in the Monregalese area: Aib volunteer under investigation (October 2026)

Forestry carabinieri from Mondovì have placed a 39-year-old man, born in Villanova Mondovì and resident in Peveragno, on the register of persons under investigation; he is a member of the Piedmont Region's Aib (anti-wildfire) volunteer corps. He is suspected of having deliberately started nine wildfires between the Easter period and the second half of August 2026, taking advantage of the drought and high temperatures.
The fires affected the areas of Cavanero and Peschiere in Chiusa di Pesio, Salto dell'Asino and Valfredda in Peveragno, Monte Calvario and Rolando in Villanova Mondovì, and the area around the lake in Pianfei, burning a total of about two hectares of woodland. The investigation, carried out through on-site surveys and analysis of surveillance footage, lasted several months.
The man is charged with arson of woodland, an offence under article 423-bis of the criminal code punishable by six to ten years' imprisonment, with an aggravating factor linked to his role in wildfire prevention and firefighting. Being placed under investigation does not amount to a conviction.
