African swine fever: first cases in Gottasecca
News of

In Gottasecca, a municipality of the Alta Langa in the province of Cuneo, the first two cases of African swine fever have been confirmed in wild boar within the municipal territory. The discovery, announced by the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale (Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute) following the latest health monitoring, brings the total number of municipalities affected by the outbreak to 208 in Piedmont and to 806 including Liguria [1][2].
The infection figures
With the two new cases, the total number of confirmed positive cases in Piedmont rises to 839. The combined figure for Piedmont and Liguria reaches 2,237 cases, while Liguria counts 1,388 positive cases, including a new case recorded in Cengio, in the province of Savona [2].
The geographical spread of the outbreak
The two findings in Gottasecca confirm the geographical spread of the infection, which from its original areas around Alessandria and Liguria is advancing into the Cuneo area. The health emergency began in December 2021 [1].
Consequences for the area
For the community of Gottasecca, confirmation by the Istituto Zooprofilattico marks official entry into the so-called "red zone" of epidemiological tracing. At present no further restrictive measures or specific local ordinances have been announced, beyond those already in force at regional level for containment and biosecurity on farms and in woodland [1]. The data released concern only the results of laboratory analyses carried out on carcasses found during monitoring and surveillance activities in the area [1].
