Activation of Labour Analgesia at ASL TO4 Birth Centres
News of
Labour analgesia, that is epidural analgesia during labour (partoanalgesia), has become available at all birth centres of the Mother and Child Department of ASL TO4, led by Fabrizio Bogliatto. After the service was consolidated at the birth centre of the Ivrea hospital, it was also extended to the birth centres of the Chivasso and Ciriè hospitals [1].
Organisation of the service
The completion of the project is the result of organisational integration between the Anaesthesia and Resuscitation units of the three hospitals, led by Antonio Toscano in Ivrea, Carlo Frangioni in Chivasso and Marco Fadde in Ciriè, and the Obstetrics and Gynaecology units, led by Fabrizio Bogliatto in Ivrea, Davide Gallina in Chivasso and Giovanni Richiardi in Ciriè [1].
Access to the service
Under the organisational model shared by ASL TO4, during the health check-up at the 35th week of pregnancy women can tell the midwife of their wish to access labour analgesia; the subsequent assessment of clinical suitability is carried out by the anaesthetist [1].
Statements
ASL TO4's Director General, Luigi Vercellino, described the result as grounded in equitable access to services and the humanisation of care, stressing that the achievement is the fruit of synergy between the Emergency Department, with its Anaesthesia and Resuscitation units, and the Mother and Child Department, with its Obstetrics and Gynaecology units [1].
