Abandonment of Six Kittens in Stupinigi on 21 September 2026
On 21 September 2026, the feast day of San Matteo, patron saint of Nichelino, the Municipal Police intervened in one of the parking areas along the SP143, near the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi. The intervention followed a report from a passing citizen, who had noticed some kittens wandering in the area.
The discovery
Six kittens, about a month old, were found abandoned by the roadside. The animals were rescued by the officers and entrusted to the care of the Moncalieri cat shelter; once their course of treatment is complete, they will be made available for adoption [1][2].
The investigation
The local Police have opened an investigation to identify the person responsible for the abandonment, who may have been captured by the surveillance cameras present in the area. If identified, the person responsible faces a criminal complaint for the offence of animal abandonment under Article 727 of the Criminal Code; if the abandonment took place using a vehicle, suspension of the driving licence is also provided for [1][2].
The administration's response
The Councillor for Animal Welfare Policies, Fiodor Verzola, stated: «We will do everything necessary, we will file a complaint and we will take care of these animals», adding that, once treated, the kittens will be put up for adoption. Verzola also recalled the educational initiatives carried out by the City to counter similar episodes, citing in particular the event scheduled for the same weekend in Stupinigi [2].
The context: the International Cat Expo
The incident occurred just days before the first International Cat Expo, scheduled for 26 and 27 September 2026 in the Citroniera di Ponente of the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi, an event dedicated to cat fancying featuring judging, awards, and meetings with breeders and experts. A fundraiser in support of feline colonies is also planned during the event [2].
