2026 Armed Forces Day in Giaglione
Date of the event:
The 2026 Armed Forces Day (Festa delle Forze Armate) in Giaglione is the ceremony that the Val di Susa municipality held on 1 November for Armed Forces and National Unity Day. The celebrations took place between the town hall, in the hamlet (frazione) of San Giuseppe, and the Parco della Rimembranza, involving residents and local authorities.[1]
The day's programme
The procession set off in front of the town hall, where participants gathered around the War Memorial. During the flag-raising, the notes of "Il Silenzio" (the Italian military last-post call) were played, accompanied by the laying of flowers dedicated to those who gave their lives for their country.[1]
The commemoration continued with a Mass and then moved to the Parco della Rimembranza, where a solemn blessing was held, along with a further laying of laurel wreaths and official speeches by the authorities.[1]
The significance of the occasion
Armed Forces Day, marked on 4 November, is linked to the completion of Italy's national unity after the First World War and recalls the principles of freedom and democracy set out in the Italian Constitution. According to the Ministry of Defence, the 4 November celebrations provide an ideal link between the nation's historic sacrifice and the everyday work carried out by military personnel.[1]
In Giaglione the occasion is a tradition the whole community feels strongly about: in the past, the 4 November celebrations have included the participation of the town band alongside other local groups.[1]
