18 September 2026 strike at Turin's Apple Stores
On 18 September 2026 the employees of the Apple Store at via Roma 82, in Turin, took part in a 24-hour national strike organised by the unions Filcams Cgil, Fisascat Cisl and UILTuCS, involving workers at Apple stores across Italy. The protest took place on the day the company unveiled its new generation of iPhones, a date chosen by the unions, not by chance, to give the mobilisation greater visibility. In Turin a picket was organised in front of the via Roma store, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.[1][2]
The reasons for the protest
The demands mainly concerned workloads and the stabilisation of precarious workers, rather than pay conditions. According to Fabrizio Nicoletti, an official of Filcams Cgil Torino, there is a staffing problem: even though work is by appointment, staff build up delays and struggle to keep commitments to customers.[1]
In Turin there are about 170 Apple employees, split between the via Roma store and the one at the Le Gru shopping centre. Claudia Bongiovanni, a Cgil union representative at the Le Gru store, pointed to the company's market capitalisation of 5 billion dollars, criticising the lack of resources to give permanent contracts to precarious and fixed-term workers, who make up about 10% of staff. Nicoletti also reported an exodus of workers in the period before the strike, not motivated by economic reasons.[1]
The national context
The mobilisation comes after months of talks between unions and the company and follows national assemblies held on 7 September 2026, which revealed growing discontent among Apple store workers in Italy. The unions say the quality of service Apple offers its customers is guaranteed by staff's daily commitment, and call it unacceptable for the pursuit of maximum productivity to translate into worsening working conditions or ever-increasing pressure on employees.[1]
