Pope Leo XIV's surgery

On Sunday 11 October 2026, during the Angelus, Pope Leo XIV announced that he would undergo surgery in the following days for a lung nodule, detected at an early stage during routine medical check-ups.[2]

The same day, Cardinal Roberto Repole issued a message inviting the faithful to pray for the pontiff, writing: «The Church of Piedmont joins in the feelings of affection and the prayer of the Italian Church for the Pope. I believe that all the peoples of the Earth are drawing close to Leo XIV with the same feeling, because they have found in this Pope a good father, something the world needs. I am particularly close to him, together with the College of Cardinals, and I carry the affection of all Piedmontese people».[1]

Repole also asked that the words of Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, president of the Italian Episcopal Conference, be shared: «We thank Pope Leo for the simplicity and trust with which he has made us part of this trial. We are a family: Holy Father, you are not alone! We accompany you with our prayer and our affection, so that the surgery may go well and that the Lord may grant you serenity and strength».[1][2]
