Minute of Silence for Mazzola Disrupted in Curva Sud

On 20 September 2026, before the Serie A match between Juventus and Atalanta played at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, a minute of silence was held in memory of Sandro Mazzola, former Inter and Italy national team player, who died at the age of 83. During the tribute, part of the Juventus curva sud turned their backs to the pitch and chanted songs dedicated to Gaetano Scirea and Gianni Agnelli, instead of observing the requested silence.[1][2]

What happened

The minute of silence, dedicated to the memory of Mazzola, was accompanied by applause from many fans present at the stadium, but was not observed by everyone. In particular, in the curva sud several Juventus supporters turned their backs to the pitch, while others continued singing chants unrelated to the commemoration.[1]

According to accounts of the events, the Juventus organised supporters chose to continue with their own chants during the tribute to Mazzola's memory, singing in particular songs dedicated to Gaetano Scirea and Gianni Agnelli, historic figures linked to the Juventus club.[2]

The minute of silence nonetheless ended with applause from the majority of the fans present at the Allianz Stadium.[2]
