Meliga Day of Sant'Ambrogio di Torino

The Meliga Day is the regional Sagra of Paste di Meliga, an event held every year in Sant'Ambrogio di Torino, a municipality in the Lower Susa Valley. The event is dedicated to the Paste di Meliga, biscuits typical of the town and awarded the DeCo, the municipal designation. The event combines an artisan and food fair with music, shows and cultural visits to the historic village.[1][2]

Origin of the product

The Paste di Meliga have their roots in a period of economic hardship, when a poor wheat harvest pushed up the price of flour. Local bakers then began mixing "00" flour with corn "fumetto", a finely ground corn flour that, while not suitable for polenta, proved ideal for making fragrant pastries.[1][2]

The event

Along the streets of Sant'Ambrogio's historic centre, an artisan and food fair is held where local producers display Paste di Meliga in various forms, often paired with zabaione cream or with passito, Moscato or Dolcetto wines. During the sagra it is possible to visit the Permanent Museum of Pasta di Meliga, which recounts its history and evolution.[1][2]

The 2026 edition

The 18th edition of the regional Sagra of Paste di Meliga was held from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 September 2026. The programme included, in Piazza della Repubblica, the Jungle Company event with DJ sets and tastings; sagra stalls open throughout the three days; the photography exhibitions "Agrosfera: storie di tradizione e di innovazione" and "Elena Cantore: frammenti artistici e spirituali"; one of the Visite Suonate at the Museo Giansone; the sporting events Ambro Leo Run, Athena Dance and the non-competitive S-Corriamo Insieme organised by Fidas; and the Meliga Contest music competition.[1][2]

On Sunday the historic centre hosted guided tours of the church of San Giovanni Vincenzo, the Romanesque bell tower and the town tower, performances by the local Filarmonica, a travelling karaoke and a concert dedicated to Italian singer-songwriters. In Piazza Abbadia there was a performance by Italian bike trial champions, while Piazza XXV Aprile hosted the opening of the Museo Giansone, a Lego brick workshop, a concert by the group Carisma and a dance performance. The day concluded with institutional greetings, the presentation of the De.Co. designation for the Pasta di Meliga and the awarding of the producers.[1][2]
