On 29 October 2026 Marco Basoccu, a 36-year-old Juventus fan, was operated on at Turin's Cto hospital for the consequences of head injuries sustained during the clashes that took place before the Turin derby (Torino–Juventus) on the preceding 24 May. The operation, which lasted about three hours, was described by hospital sources as technically successful [1][2].

The operation

During the surgery, doctors fitted a cranial prosthesis custom-made for Basoccu and closed the wound. The team was made up of plastic surgeon Massimo Navissano, neurosurgeons Francesca Vincitorio and Salvatore Petrone, and anaesthetist Alice Mistretta [1][2].

The clashes of 24 May

Basoccu had been injured in piazzale San Gabriele di Gorizia, in Turin, during fighting between fans that broke out before the Turin derby, near the Stadio Grande Torino. According to the Turin public prosecutor's office's reconstruction, he was hit in the head by a tear-gas canister fired during the clashes [1][2].

The investigations

The Turin public prosecutor's office opened two separate investigation files on the matter. In the first, an officer of Turin police's mobile unit is under investigation for aggravated injury, accused of having fired the tear-gas canister at Basoccu in a manner that did not comply with the prescribed procedures: the review tribunal ruled that the officer can return to work and receive full pay, though without operating on the street, after an initial suspension from duty [2]. The second file concerns the fans who took part in the fighting before the match: dozens of them are under investigation and have received precautionary measures, triggering protests from organised Juventus supporters [2].
