Born in Rome and raised in Turin, Mitola trained at the Massimo D'Azeglio classical lyceum and graduated in law in the Piedmontese capital. After military service, he passed the 1995 public competition for deputy commissioner and joined the Turin police headquarters (Questura) the following year.[1]

From 2003 he was attached to the judicial police of the Turin Flying Squad (Squadra Mobile), heading its anti-robbery, anti-drugs and homicide sections and coordinating, among other cases, the investigation that led to the arrest of the attacker of lawyer and city councillor Alberto Musy.[1]
Promoted to first-rank official (primo dirigente) in 2015, he headed Turin's General Prevention and Public Rescue Office for five years, receiving in 2017 the honour of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, along with five solemn commendations, nineteen commendations and thirty-five citations.[1]
Between 2020 and early 2024 he led the Turin Flying Squad, then became deputy to the questore, a role in which he coordinated public-order policing for the G7 summit. Promoted to senior official (dirigente superiore) in summer 2025, he headed the Railway Police Division of Lombardy before his appointment to Asti.[1]
Questore of Asti
On 2 November 2026 Mitola met the prefect of Asti and took up office as the province's new questore, stating: "Our task is to provide a service to the community."[2][3]
