On 29 October 2026, the new 0-6 Children's Centre (Polo dell'Infanzia) on via Verolengo was inaugurated in Turin's Madonna di Campagna district. The facility brings together a nursery, a preschool and family support services under one roof, with the aim of ensuring educational continuity from birth to age six [1][2]. The building, in the Spina 3 area, has already been in operation since the start of the school year and was built with an investment of 3.3 million euros funded by the Pnrr (Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan), under Mission 4 dedicated to education and research [2].

The facility

The centre is organised around a central "agora", a multi-purpose space designed as a place for meeting and sharing. The west wing houses two teaching units for children aged one to two, while the east wing has three units for the three-to-six age group [1][2]. The areas for children connect directly to outdoor spaces and have sheltered, shaded courtyards overlooking a landscaped green area [2].

The educational project pays particular attention to inclusion, including through the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), a tool that expands children's ability to express themselves and take part, supporting interaction for those who have difficulty with verbal communication [1][2].

Environmental sustainability

The building meets nZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) standards, used for high-energy-performance buildings able to cover a significant share of their needs from renewable sources. Construction also complied with the Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM) and the "Do No Significant Harm" (DNSH) principle required for projects funded under the Pnrr [2].

The inauguration

The ribbon-cutting was attended by Turin mayor Stefano Lo Russo, education councillor Carlotta Salerno, the chair of District 5 Alfredo Correnti, the head of General and Administrative Services of the Frassati school group Chiara Donatiello, and the director of the City of Turin's Education Services Claudio Sciaraffa [2]. Mayor Lo Russo said that «with the 0-6 centres we are building a new way of thinking about education, putting educational continuity at the centre» [1][2]. Councillor Salerno highlighted the attention given to augmentative and alternative communication as a tool that «expands the possibilities for expression, participation and relationships» [1].
