Gianluca Bufo is the chief executive officer of Gruppo Iren, the multi-utility company headquartered in Turin that operates in the water cycle, electricity distribution, waste-to-energy plants and environmental services sectors. In this role he has led the presentation of the Group's industrial plans, including the update approved in October 2026.

The 2026–2035 industrial plan

On 27 October 2026 the board of directors of Iren approved the update of the industrial plan to 2035, which provides for investments of 10.4 billion euros and 2,800 new hires linked to generational and managerial turnover [1][2]. About half of the resources are earmarked for strategic infrastructure in the water cycle, electricity distribution and waste-to-energy plants [1][2].

Commenting on the plan, Gianluca Bufo stated: «With 10.4 billion euros of investment, about half of which is earmarked for strategic infrastructure in the water cycle, electricity distribution and waste-to-energy plants, the Plan strengthens Iren's positioning in the businesses where we have distinctive expertise and a solid competitive advantage» [1]. He added that the Group had embarked on «an important transformation process [...] based on synergies, digitalisation, artificial intelligence and organisational simplification», with the aim of bringing the return on investment to 10% by 2035 [1][2].

According to the forecasts of the plan presented by Bufo, the Group's gross operating margin will grow by an average of 4% a year until 2035, while net profit will increase by an average of 6% a year [1][2]. The dividend is expected to grow by 8% a year until 2027 and by 6% a year until 2030 [1][2]. Bufo stressed that the financial flexibility maintained by the plan gives the Group «a stronger capacity for investment to seize further strategic opportunities» [1].

Sustainability

The industrial plan is accompanied by an update of the Group's sustainability and transition plan: more than 73% of the planned investments, equal to around 7.6 billion euros, are earmarked for projects linked to the sustainable transition, with a focus on water resources, resilient cities, the circular economy and decarbonisation, as specified by executive vice-president Moris Ferretti [2].
