FP CGIL Vigili del Fuoco Torino

FP CGIL Vigili del Fuoco Torino is the provincial branch of the Funzione Pubblica CGIL (FP CGIL) trade union bringing together workers of the Turin Fire Brigade Command. The branch is part of the wider FP CGIL VVF union organisation, active nationwide and affiliated, through the European Public Service Union (EPSU), with international trade union initiatives in the public services sector.[1]

Structure and representatives

The provincial coordinator of FP CGIL VVF in Turin is Nunzio De Nigris, who also sits on the union's National Coordination Committee and serves as National Officer for Health and Safety. At the Turin Command, Elena Guidi and Lorenzo Fresta also serve as workers' safety representatives (RLS).[1]

Demands and mobilisation

The union calls for investment in staffing, pensions, training and professional and financial recognition for Fire Brigade personnel, in the face of a rise in climate-related emergencies. On 21 October 2026, FP CGIL VVF held assemblies and a day of mobilisation across Italian Fire Brigade Commands to highlight structural shortcomings in the National Fire Brigade, while a national strike by the category is planned for 20 November 2026.[1]

Occupational health and safety

A central issue in FP CGIL VVF's union action is firefighters' occupational exposure to smoke, PFAS and other toxic substances during fires. The union has put forward a proposal to recognise this risk through a financial allowance, alongside health, pension and insurance protections that remain valid after the end of active service. FP CGIL argues that financial recognition should not replace prevention, calling for adequate personal protective equipment, health monitoring and uniform post-fire decontamination procedures, extended to contaminated vehicles, equipment and workplaces.[1]

European dimension

On 3 November 2026, a Piedmontese delegation of FP CGIL VVF, led by Nunzio De Nigris together with Elena Guidi and Lorenzo Fresta of the Turin Command, took part in Brussels in the European trade union mobilisation day organised by EPSU, held alongside the European Civil Protection Forum 2026. The delegation brought European attention to its demands on resources, staffing, rights and health protections for firefighters.[1]
