On 28 October 2026 the Piedmont Regional Council discussed and voted on several motions on the subject of protests and public security, following demonstrations that in the preceding weeks had affected Turin and other Italian cities. The chamber approved the motion put forward by the majority, signed by Fratelli d'Italia, while rejecting the motions put forward by the opposition groups Avs, the PD and the M5S [1][2].

The content of the approved motion

The approved text condemns the incidents of violence that occurred during some demonstrations, expresses solidarity with the police and calls for strengthened prevention and enforcement measures. The requests put forward include certain punishment, greater operational tools for the police and enhanced prevention activities [1][2].

Positions in the chamber

During the debate, a different reading of the issue emerged between the majority and the opposition, despite a shared condemnation of the violent incidents. The centre-right groups — Fratelli d'Italia, Lega, Forza Italia and Lista Cirio — called the clashes and destruction that occurred during some demonstrations unacceptable, arguing that social or generational unease cannot become an excuse to justify violence, vandalism and attacks on institutions, and reiterating the need to guarantee security for residents, shopkeepers and students [1][2].

The opposition groups, while also expressing solidarity with police officers and condemning the episodes of violence, called for the debate not to be limited to repressive aspects. The PD, M5S, Avs and Sue drew attention to the causes of the unease fuelling the protests, citing youth hardship, the rising cost of living, the right to education, job insecurity and social difficulties, arguing that security and prevention must go hand in hand with investment in schools, culture, inclusion and services [1][2].
