Carta Ronaldo
The «Carta Ronaldo» (Ronaldo Paper) is the name given to the financial dispute between Juventus and the Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo, arising from the salary agreements reached by the Turin club during the Covid-19 emergency and never fully settled after the player's transfer to Manchester United in the summer of 2021. The affair, which takes its name from the document in which the club's leadership agreed a residual debt of €19.5 million with the player, has been the subject of legal proceedings under way since 2021 and represents one of the most significant financial disputes in the club's recent history.
The arbitration award
On 17 April 2024 an arbitration panel ruled on the claim brought by Cristiano Ronaldo, finding Juventus liable on pre-contractual grounds and partly upholding the player's claim: the Portuguese forward was awarded about €9.8 million, plus interest and revaluation, against a total claim of about €19.6 million [1][2]. The sum was paid to Ronaldo in the 2023/24 financial year [2].
The appeal to the Turin Court
Juventus challenged the arbitration award before the Labour Section of the Turin Court, arguing that the ruling contained formal defects. The appeal was rejected in January 2026: according to the club, however, that ruling was limited to reviewing the award's formal defects, without addressing the merits of the whole affair [1][2].
The appeal to the Court of Cassation
Against the Turin Court's decision, Juventus filed an appeal with the Court of Cassation, served on 27 March 2026. The club disclosed the legal action in its 2025-26 financial report, specifying that the hearing has not yet been scheduled [1][2].
Effects on the company accounts
According to Juventus's financial documentation, the economic effects of the arbitration award have already been provisioned for in the accounts of previous financial years. The club has stated that no further negative impact is expected from the affair, either on the current accounts or on future ones [1][2].
