Beaulard railway accident of 7 October 2026

On 7 October 2026, in the late afternoon, a train on the Sfm3 Turin-Bardonecchia line, travelling towards France, struck and killed a shepherd between the hamlets of Savoulx and Beaulard, in the municipality of Oulx, in upper Valle di Susa. The man died instantly. Several sheep from his flock were also killed in the accident.12

Sequence of events

According to initial reconstructions, the shepherd was bringing his livestock down from the high pastures when some animals strayed onto the railway embankment, in an area where access is forbidden. The man was trying to retrieve the sheep that had escaped onto the tracks towards Beaulard when he was struck by the train.12

Emergency response and effects on rail traffic

Paramedics, firefighters, carabinieri and the railway police of Bussoleno responded to the scene. Investigations into the circumstances of the accident are under way.12

Rail traffic was completely suspended between Oulx and Bardonecchia until the man's body and the sheep carcasses were removed. Trenitalia took the roughly thirty passengers on the affected train to their destination, while a replacement bus service was set up between Salbertrand and Bardonecchia; in the meantime trains terminated at Oulx.12
