In October 2026, Turin's District 6 (Circoscrizione 6) — a sub-municipal district with its own elected council — issues a public ultimatum over the flower planters placed on via Ivrea, in the district of the same name: either people willing to look after them are found, or the planters will be removed for good. The planters, installed about a decade earlier to beautify the street, have become the focus of a debate on urban decorum after turning, according to reports, into a symbol of neglect and incivility [1].

The situation reported

At least a dozen planters are involved. Some have been damaged in accidents, as confirmed by inspections of one planter recently struck by a vehicle, while others are being used as rubbish bins. Councillor Fabio Cambai (M5S) says "too many inconsiderate people have turned them into a rubbish bin". Councillor Michele Celentano, of the Verso i Moderati group, also reports small daily thefts of flowers, while still believing that removing the planters would deprive the street of a decorative feature [1].

The District's proposal

The District's environment coordinator, Giulia Zaccaro, outlines the strategy put in place before any final removal: finding local groups willing to take care of the planters, including giving them a coat of paint to restore them. The appeal is addressed to spontaneous residents' committees, parishes, associations and schools in the area, as also urged by the Five Star Movement (M5S) [1].

Collaboration agreements and information signs

To encourage the adoption of public assets, the city administration plans to set up a dedicated budget line for those who sign a collaboration agreement (patto di collaborazione) to look after the planters. In the days following the announcement, information signs are put up on the planters to let residents know adoption is possible [1].
