The Molinette kidney transplant centre in Turin exceeds 5,000 procedures (October 2026)

The «A. Vercellone» kidney transplant centre at the Molinette hospital of Turin's Città della Salute e della Scienza reaches and exceeds, after almost 45 years since its founding, 5,000 kidney transplants: it is the first centre in Italy to reach this milestone and one of eight in Europe.1234

The first transplant was performed on 7 November 1981; as of 1 October 2026 the total stands at 5,057 kidney transplants, of which 4,755 from deceased donors and 302 from living donors, plus 223 double transplants and 184 from non-heart-beating donors.12

The 5,000th transplant was performed on a 63-year-old woman, on dialysis since 2024 for a hereditary kidney disease, who was able to stop dialysis after the operation; the case was presented on 9 October 2026 at the conference «5,000 kidney transplants: contributions, innovations and results of a programme», in the Aula Magna Molinette Incontra on corso Bramante.123

The Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplant department is headed by professor Luigi Biancone.3
