On 3 November 2026, in the Sala Sinopoli of the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone in Rome, the official route of the 110th Giro d'Italia was unveiled, scheduled from 8 to 30 May 2027. The race will start in Trieste and finish in Rome, covering a total of 3,418.9 kilometres and 50,250 metres of elevation gain over 21 stages [1][2]. None of the stages will touch the North-West: Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d'Aosta are completely excluded from the route, a situation that had not occurred for a long time and which is the main news angle for the region [1].

The presentation and the absences

The Rome event was attended by Rome's councillor for Major Events, Sport, Tourism and Fashion Alessandro Onorato, the leadership of RCS MediaGroup and RCS Sport headed by chairman Urbano Cairo, La Gazzetta dello Sport editor Stefano Barigelli and the new director of the pink race Luca Guercilena [1][2]. According to reports, the absence of Piedmont and neighbouring regions from the route is linked to economic considerations, since the organisation of starts and stages often involves commercial logic and bidding by local areas [1]. The exclusion marks a break from the 2025 edition of the Giro, which had instead passed through Piedmont [2].

A partial involvement: the women's Giro in Courmayeur

Despite the total absence of the men's Giro from the North-West, an indirect link with the Alpine region remains: the Giro d'Italia Women's race has its final finish in Courmayeur, with Mont Blanc as the backdrop, offering a partial counterweight to the geographic void felt for the men's 2027 edition [1].

The route of the 2027 Giro

The race will set off on 8 May with a stage between Trieste and Slovenia, continue with a stage entirely within Slovenia and touch, among the most significant stages, Filottrano in tribute to Michele Scarponi on the tenth anniversary of his death, the Campo di Giove uphill time trial, the finish at Mugello, the Monza-Milan time trial and, in the third week, the double climb of the Mortirolo and the Gavia Pass in the Sondrio-Aprica stage. The grand finale is set for the Zoncolan on 29 May, before the finish in Rome the following day [1][2].
