Fire at the Lorusso e Cutugno prison in Turin (October 2026)
On the afternoon of Monday 12 October 2026, at around 3:30 pm, an inmate starts a fire in the seventh section of pavilion A of the Lorusso e Cutugno remand prison in Turin, in the Atsm ward, setting fire to a mattress and other personal belongings.[1][2]
Smoke fills the section and four prison police officers suffer smoke inhalation; they are taken to the emergency room of the Maria Vittoria hospital and later discharged, two with a two-day prognosis and two with a one-day prognosis. No inmates are reported injured.[1][2]
The Osapp union denounces the absence of fire masks and the failure of the fire hose, circumstances still to be verified: staff reportedly organised a bucket brigade to put out the flames. Osapp secretary general Leo Beneduci speaks of the risk of "a massacre" and calls for checks on firefighting equipment.[1][2]
