Fare-dodging and security checks on Turin's public transport (September 2026)
On Friday 18 September 2026 the Carabinieri of the San Carlo company and GTT staff carry out a special check on Turin's public transport in the nightlife districts, between Piazza Madama Cristina, Via XX Settembre and Piazza Vittorio Veneto: of 450 passengers checked aboard seven bus and tram lines (18, 67, 55, 56, 4, 13 and 61), more than a hundred, around a quarter of the total, are found without a ticket and fined; the Carabinieri also identify 45 people, 41 of them foreign nationals, and carry out two personal searches for drugs.
In the same period GTT extends its «Safe Tram» and «Safe Bus» surveillance services to daytime hours, having until then operated only in the evening on tram lines 4, 2 and 11 from 17:45 to 23:45; between January and August 2026 the two initiatives led to checks on more than 76,000 passengers aboard around 3,600 vehicles. In the preceding days, a joint operation by the State Police and GTT in the San Donato district, at the Bernini metro stop and on Via Livorno, led to checks on 239 passengers, 40 fines for travelling without a ticket, and the arrest of one person for possession of drugs for the purpose of dealing aboard a vehicle.
