Edisu announcement on student accommodation places for 2026/2027
On 9 October 2026, Edisu Piemonte, the regional agency for the right to university education, announced in a statement the availability of 3,167 accommodation places for university students for the 2026/2027 academic year. The number marks an increase of 423 places compared to the previous year and is almost double the 1,637 places available in the 2021/2022 academic year. Of the 3,167 places, 2,706 are located in the Turin area and 461 in the rest of Piedmont. The announcement comes in response to protests by university collectives on the housing issue held in the preceding days.[1][2]
Context and data
According to Edisu, the increase in the supply of accommodation places was also made possible thanks to measures funded under the Pnrr. The agency stated that it had met with students who were requesting clarification on the allocations, individually reviewing the reported cases: the anomalies found amounted to 96 out of a total of 3,167 assignees, and according to the agency most of these had been resolved the day before the announcement through new allocations.[1][2]
The president's statements
The president of Edisu Piemonte, Roberta Piano, stated that five years earlier the available places numbered 1,637 and that today they have doubled, following a trend of steady growth that has made it possible to increase the supply of accommodation places in all of Piedmont's university hubs. Piano also announced that in the coming years five new residences will be built, which will provide more than 800 additional places across the region.[1][2]
Piano explained that the expansion and diversification of the housing supply made it necessary to update the allocation criteria, with the aim of fostering greater balance in the composition of residential communities and their integration. She finally stressed that listening to student representatives is a distinctive feature of the agency, guaranteed both in institutional settings, such as the Board of Directors, and in any other forum suited to addressing and resolving problems.[1][2]
