E-CHANGE Research Project of the University of Turin on Climate and Health

The Epidemiology Unit of the University of Turin and the Città della Salute e della Scienza di Torino hospital trust are launching E-CHANGE in September 2026 – an acronym for boosting Epidemiological methods to assess human health risks in a CHANGing climatE –, a project funded by the Italian Science Fund (Fis 2) of the Ministry of University and Research. The study brings together epidemiology, biostatistics, molecular biology and climate science to examine how climate exposures affect health over different time spans, from days to years, overcoming the limitations of studies that focus on a single health outcome.

The research is organised into two areas: the short-term effects of heatwaves, wildfires and floods on daily mortality in Italy and on the spread of vector-borne diseases such as West Nile virus, dengue and Lyme disease; and the long-term effects of climate exposures during pregnancy and childhood on growth and respiratory health, including epigenetic changes. For its analyses, E-CHANGE will use large climate, environmental and health databases, including national mortality data and the Italian mother-child cohorts NINFEA and Piccolipiù.
