Death of Nicolò Di Ciò

Nicolò Di Ciò, a seven-year-old boy, dies on 22 September 2026 in Turin, struck by a person driving a car while he was cycling along the service road of corso Regina Margherita on his way to school [2].

Black armbands at the Cycling World Championships

Following an appeal circulated online, the Italian Cycling Federation asked the International Cycling Union (UCI) for permission for Italian athletes to race wearing black armbands in Nicolò's memory at the Cycling World Championships in Montreal. The UCI initially rejected the request, then granted it only for the Elite races on Saturday 26 September (women) and Sunday 27 September (men) [1]. In its official statement the FCI said it had acted «interpreting the feelings of clubs and members and welcoming the request coming from many quarters», aiming to remember Nicolò «and all cyclists, members and non-members alike, or simply people who use a bicycle, who have died on Italy's roads» [1].

The 29 September vigil

Nicolò's death came amid a series of five deaths in ten days in Turin and Milan due to road accidents, which also involved other people on bicycles, on foot or on motorcycles [2]. For 29 September 2026 at 7 p.m. a simultaneous double vigil was organised: in Turin outside the Town Hall and in Milan on via Antonini and in piazza della Scala, outside Palazzo Marino, with the shared demand that road safety become a priority for the authorities [2]. The organisers called for action on road design, turning service roads into pedestrian- and cyclist-priority spaces, more checks and penalties against dangerous driving and illegal parking [2].

The Vanchiglia Insieme Committee's walk

On 25 September 2026 the Vanchiglia Insieme Committee organised an evening neighbourhood walk in Nicolò's memory, gathering on via Balbo and setting off at 8 p.m. [1][2]. The initiative followed the «human cycle lane», a daily vigil by cyclists and neighbourhood associations, including Fiab Bike Pride Torino, who each morning since the day after the accident have occupied the service road of corso Regina Margherita with their bicycles to protest against speeding and illegal parking along the cycle lane [2].
